It has been awhile since I posted any news. I've recently returned from visiting family in Oahu, Hawaii. While there, I met with a pearl dealer and purchased some beautiful pearls that I am eager to use in my jewelry. As soon as I get something fabricated, I'll post it. Being able to use my creative talents through my work is immensely satisfying.
During the past few months, I've signed a contract to teach for a week in April 2011 at John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina. It is a wonderful place to learn in a non-pressured environment and I encourage those interested in seeing what they offer in the way of classes to visit their website.
I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer. Take care!

Last night was the second year that I have participated in the Bozarts Holiday Miniature Show in Water Valley, Mississippi. It was a fun time! I enjoyed visiting with regional artists and the various University of Mississippi faculty members and their spouses that attended. I've included a couple of pictures from this successful and festive event.

Displaying my jewelry.

First, I want to note that yesterday was a day that we all pause to remember 9-11-01. We will never forget! God bless our great nation and all those that fight and have fought for our freedom.
On a joyful note, I am now a first time grandmother to beautiful and perfect little grandson. It is thrilling to be a grandmother and I am celebrating his joyous birth.
Recently I made something special for him by fabricating a sterling silver baby rattle. On the top of the rattle, I sweat soldered a little sea turtle in recognition of the sea turtles that are in Hawaii, the place of his birth. It was a fun project and somewhat challenging. Below is a picture of the baby rattle.

Hello. This week I finished a pink tourmaline brooch done with art clay and sterling sheet. Recently I attended a weekend course at John C. Campbell Folk School where we made our own plates for art clay. The patterned clay burns away in the kiln leaving pure silver. There is a minimal amount of shrinkage. Personally I like having a more substantial back and riveted sterling silver sheet to the fine silver. After adding the patina, I set the pink tourmaline. I really think the end result is very pretty. Below is a picture.

As an update to the class that I taught recently at John C. Campbell Folk School, I received pins made by two of my students to wear on my work apron. They are such sweet gifts and am so proud to wear them. As a class gift, I received a beautiful hand painted silk scarf. The class was awesome and I will always treasure each person's friendship and their thoughtful gifts.

I am now on twitter as skjartjewelry. If you would like to follow me, please look me up.

Best regards to everyone! Susan Jones

Hello! This past week was truly unbelievable! I had the honor and privilege of teaching a silversmith course at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. The students were awesome and so nice. They worked long hours and did the most incredible work. At the end of the week, the class gave me a beautiful hand painted silk scarf. I love it! They were so sweet and kind to me. This will be a class that I will always remember. My assistant for the week was Barbara Joiner, resident metalsmith jeweler at JCCFS. We are great friends and being with her was most enjoyable and a bonus for the students.
The following pictures are from the week.

Hello! This next week I'll be teaching a beginning silversmith course at John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. I look forward to meeting my students and to a week of teaching. We'll have some fun projects where a variety of metal fabrication techniques will be covered. I'll try to post photos later. It should be an awesome time. It is wonderful that the class is full with three on the wait list! Can't wait to meet everyone.
Take care.

Yesterday I returned from a week long course at John C. Campbell Folk School. The course work involved learning the technique of using gesso and colored pencils on metal, which was most enjoyable. Marriage of metals was another technique that was covered and we laughed and said most of our pieces were married and divorced. I successfully married brass, silver and copper. Barbara Joiner, the teacher, did an awesome job teaching. We worked long hours in the studio throughout the week and I was tired by the week's end. The week was wonderful and I was so glad to have experienced it.
The following picture is of one of the brooches that I made using gesso and colored pencils.
